Kirk Mathews, MBA
Kirk founded one of the nation’s first hospitalist practice management companies. From its start-up in 1997 until it was sold in 2011, Mr. Mathews started and managed dozens of hospitalist programs. His company served hospitals in 19 states ranging from 90 bed community hospitals to 600 bed urban hospitals to university academic medical centers. He has employed and/or managed hundreds of hospitalists, nurse practitioners and nurses.
Prior to starting his company, Mr. Mathews led one of the nation’s largest physician recruiting firms; this experience prepared him well for the challenging hospitalist recruiting environment. He has become one of the nation’s leading authorities on hospitalist recruitment. He is a frequent speaker on the topic and authored the book A Practical Guide to Hospitalist Recruitment and Retention published by HCPro.
Mr. Mathews’ extensive experience provides him with unique skills to analyze and address the many operational challenges facing hospital medicine programs of all types and size. He is especially interested in compensation plan design, quality initiatives and healthcare reform. Mr. Mathews is active in the Society of Hospital Medicine and has served on its Public Policy Committee.
